If you are an American living in Spain with a non-lucrative visa, the buying process is a bit more difficult, but Mortgage Direct nearly instantly connected us with a bank that understood our situation and approved us for a mortgage. After wasting a week because of the bank that initially rejected us, we were on an extremely tight schedule and feared that we would lose our apartment if we couldn’t get approved for a mortgage *very* quickly. Mortgages taken out in currencies other than the currency in which you earn are considered Foreign Currency Mortgages. Changes in the exchange rate may therefore increase the equivalent value of your debt.
