Costa Blanca: Beaches, limestone and mortgages for non-residents

The “Costa Blanca”. Even with a minimum of Spanish, most of us can translate that as the “White Coast” and very apt it is too, referring not only to the long, sandy beaches of Denia, Javea and Moraira, but also to the glistening limestone of the countless bays and coves between, and the iconic Ifach rock of Calpe.

But to define the area by its coastline is to miss out on the treasures of the inland mountains, valleys and villages of the region.

Just half hour’s drive inland takes you to the “Val de Pop”, often referred to as the Jalon Valley, home to the villages and small towns of Jalon, Alcalali and Lliber among others, sitting among the vineyards and almond groves the area is known for. Each has its own distinct character; Jalon with its wine “bodegas” and weekly market, and Lliber with its annual “Festival of the Cured Sausage” (yes, it sounds better in Spanish!) is not to be missed.

A Little further inland and up through the mountains, the historic city of Alcoy gives a real sense of Spain, from its early Iberic settlers, through to the reconquest following the years of Moorish civilisation. Its Moors and Christians festival is famous throughout Spain.

Whether your passion is for history, food and drink, hill/mountain walking, cycling or e-biking, the interior area of the Costa Blanca is a must to explore.
